Common Signs of Wear

Like tires, air filters, and brake shoes, wiper blades are components which require periodic replacement. Unfortunately, most drivers neglect them and only realize that new ones are needed when their vision is compromised during a rain or snow storm. Be proactive and inspect your blades regularly for damage to the rubber squeegee and supporting steel superstructure. Below are a few signs it's time to consider replacement:

• Bent frame. It can get damaged for a number of reasons from hacking the ice off a windshield to some car washes. Whatever the reason, a bent wiper arm results in bad windshield contact.
• Streaking. It happens when a rubber squeegee hardens, dries, or cracks or some foreign substances like tree sap collect on a windshield or a blade.
• Splitting. A rubber squeegee deteriorates from the sun and separates from the frame.
• Chattering. Those sounds mean that blades are in contact with the glass only some of the time and cannot properly clean it.

If you live in a temperate climate that sees very little snow, then conventional frame-type windshield wipers will provide excellent performance. These typically have a durable steel superstructure with claws to hold the natural rubber squeegee, and pivots and joints which enable the framework to flex and apply even pressure to the blade. This type has been installed as original equipment on millions of cars and trucks and our replacement parts provide OE equivalent quality and performance. However, if where you drive experiences significant snowfall and icy temperatures, you should consider winter windshield wipers. On conventional units, the open spaces in the latticework can become clogged with ice and snow, which prevents the blade from conforming to the windshield and create areas that go unwiped. Winter wipers have a cover which encloses the superstructure, or they can be beam-type without latticework. Both covered and beam blades inhibit the buildup of ice and snow.

Rugged Design for Severe Weather

Instead of framework, beam-type blades use a flat piece of spring steel encased in plastic to ensure the squeegee conforms to the contour of the windshield. This type is ideal for winter, but can also be used year round. Many premium blades have upgraded squeegee material, with rubber that is impregnated with silicone or coated with Teflon or graphite to help keep ice and snow from sticking to the blade. Beam wipers have a lower, more aerodynamic profile which is not susceptible to windlift, and improved materials provide longer service life.
