Aston Martin is recognized around the world for producing some of the most luxurious and exclusive sports cars on the market. Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, two previous employees of British automaker Singer, the original focus of the company was to manufacture their own brand of race cars. Martin would compete at Aston Hill, which is where the name Aston Martin comes from. World War I put a temporary pause on Aston Martin's growth, but the company picked up again at its conclusion. Bamford left in 1920 but the company went on to assemble cars to race in the French Grand Prix, where they would set numerous records for speed and endurance. It wasn't until David Brown Limited purchased the company in 1947 when Aston Martin would begin to really hit its stride as a commercial automaker. This period helped usher in the DB series of automobiles in 1948 (the initials DB stand for David Brown). The DB2 arrived shortly thereafter in 1950 as both a coupe and convertible with a 2.6L inline-6 engine.
In 1958, the DB4 premiered with a 3.7L inline 6 engine. It replaced the DB Mark III, which owned a comparable 2.9L engine. The Aston Martin DB4 was a success on the track, taking home the World Sportscar Championship among other honors. It also became the template for future achievements including the DB4 GT Zagato and the DB5, which appeared in 1964. The DB5 presented a sleeker, more aerodynamic body shape and a larger 4.0L Tadek Marek engine with a 5-speed transmission. The model also became the mode of transportation for the iconic film character James Bond in "Goldfinger"(1964), helping Aston Martin reach a much wider audience. Aston Martin's first four-seat automobile was the DB6, which premiered in 1965 and offered optional power steering as well as improved leg room for rear passengers. The DBS helped close the decade out, showing off a 4.0L Dual Overhead Camshaft engine. It also kept Aston Martin in the movie business, as the model was used for the James Bond classic "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." David Brown sold Aston Martin in 1972 however, starting an era of uncertainty within the company that would carry on through most of the '70s.
Thanks to the V8 Vantage, Aston Martin regained some of its footing. Debuting in 1977, the V8 Vantage boasted a muscular 5.3L V8 engine and a top speed of 170 mph. Ford bought Aston Martin in 1987 hoping to rescue the marque from further turbulence. Ford's first major success with Aston Martin came in 1993 with the premier of the DB7. Introduced for the 1994 model year, the DB7 was built off of the Jaguar XJS platform (originally intended for the Jaguar F-Type). In 1999, the Aston Martin DB7 V12 Vantage was unveiled. The vehicle along with its parts made an impression right from the start. Featuring a 6.0L, 48 valve V12 engine, the DB7 Vantage is capable of 420 horsepower and 400 pounds-per-foot of torque. 2001 ushered in the V12 Vanquish, another sleekly-styled sports car designed for racetrack speed and upscale clientele. In 2004, Aston Martin released the DB9. As with the Vanquish and the DB7, the DB9 is outfitted with a V12 engine. The DB9 was the first Aston Martin vehicle to be built using Ford's VH platform. The model also won the 2007 24 Hours of Le Mans, leading to a commemorative DB9 LM version of the car being made available in 2008.
