Following in the footsteps of the Charger and the Magnum before it, the Dodge Challenger was built to impress right from the start. The Challenger debuted in 1974 as another Chrysler competitor to the Mustang and Camaro along with the Plymouth Barracuda. The original Challenger was available in four hardtop variations, including the Challenger Six, Challenger V8, T/A Challenger, and Challenger R/T. The Challenger R/T (Road/Track) is considered the first performance-based version of the model. It was equipped with a 383 CID Magnum V8 mated to a 3-speed manual transmission, other engine options were also available, including a 7L HEMI. The Challenger Trans Am was an early standout thanks to its racing influence. Such Dodge Challenger parts and accessories as the vaunted 340 Six Pack, black fiberglass hood, and dual exhausts made it a car of sleek style and high performance. This is was the exact direction Dodge envisioned for the Challenger, and it proved to be a successful formula in the model’s beginning stages.
Styling and accessories of the Dodge Challenger kept some of the racing sensibilities the original series was designed with, including the hardtop. This was the Challenger the American public remembered until the modern redesign in 2005. Finally, the new Dodge Challenger was reintroduced in 2007. With a shorter wheelbase and given a slight lift and new underhood Challenger parts, it shares a lot of the same traits with the original, including a muscular body-shape, smooth lines, and of course, plenty of pop. The 2007 Dodge Challenger is based on the LX platform (the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum). Outfitted with a 6.1 L HEMI V8 engine matched with a 5-speed transmission, the Challenger has more punch than ever before.
The base Dodge Challenger boasts power windows, locks, and mirrors; cruise control, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The R/T and SRT-8 Challenger models offer drivers various other options, including larger wheels, a manual transmission, and other luxurious features for the interior such as satellite radio and leather seating. Not surprisingly, the Challenger has given the Dodge name a boost ever since it has made its way back on the market. With the brand fully committed to the car, Dodge has put forth a concerted effort to keep the Challenger front and center.
Like the clenched-fist resting at your side, the Dodge Challenger is always ready to inflict some aggression. The Dodge Challenger stands alone because it is one car that delivers on all the hype. Boasting more than enough punch to turn the asphalt into a playground with the road-gripping handling to back it up is what has made this vehicle such a hot commodity. Muscle, style, and big-time performance make the Dodge Challenger the machine that never ceases to get a crowd's attention.
