The Ford Focus hit the streets in 2000 as a sedan, hatchback, and wagon. It was designed to be an economical sedan Ford could market not only in the U.S., but also around the world. Initially, the model was outfitted with an SOHC 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine capable of around 110 horsepower, while a slightly more powerful Zetec was offered that was good for an additional 20 hp. Engines were mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Early trim levels consisted of the base LX, SE, and ZTS. In 2001, the model was updated with such Ford parts as optional antilock brakes, front-side airbags, and stability control. A year later, a four-door hatchback (ZX5) was introduced, giving the model four body styles for drivers to choose from. In 2004, Ford unveiled a 2.3L inline four-cylinder with 145 horsepower. Shortly thereafter, Ford introduced the SVT hatchback, which was marketed towards a young demographic and came with a four-cylinder that threw out up to 170 horsepower directed through a six-speed transmission. While it may not have seen any drastic changes in the beginning, constant improvements were made by the company to Ford Focus parts to keep the model enticing.
In 2005, some Focus parts were revised, which included engine options such as a 2.0L four-cylinder (136 hp) and a 2.3L four-cylinder (151 hp) offered only for the sedan. Trim levels were now dubbed S, SE, and SES. The base S was comprised of such Ford accessories as a split-folding rear seat, 15" wheels, and driver and passenger airbags. The SE didn’t deviate too much, instead adding on air conditioning, CD/MP3 compatibility, power mirrors, and power windows and locks. Stepping it up a notch was the SES, which showcased such additional amenities and upgrades as steering-wheel mounted audio controls, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, and 16" alloy wheels. A ZX4 ST trim was also offered, which carried the following Ford parts and accessories: a sport-tuned suspension, exhaust, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, chrome exhaust, a decklid spoiler, and other sporty features to lure in drivers looking for a modern "tuner" type image. However, after the 2007 model year, both the wagon and hatchback body styles were dropped from the lineup.
The third generation of the Ford Focus hit dealerships in 2008, available as a sedan and coupe. Trim levels depend on body style and range from the base S to the top level SEL trim. The Focus coupe can only be had in SE and SES trim levels. Every variant of the Focus is boosted by a 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine that produces approximately 140 horsepower (in states with strict emissions, the Focus is equipped with a PZEV-certified engine good for 130 hp). All engine configurations are mated to a five-speed manual transmission with a four-speed automatic once again offered as an option. Throughout its run on the road, the Ford Focus has been a solid success, receiving praise from around the industry. It has been present on Car and Driver’s Ten Best List, Edmunds.com’s Editor’s Most Wanted List, recognized as a Consumer Guide Recommended Buy (2005), and named as a contender for Motor Trend magazine’s prestigious Car of the Year award (2008).
