The first generation of the Nissan Pathfinder rolled off the line in 1986 for the 1987 model year. It was assembled with a body-on-frame construction and deemed more off-road compatible than most contemporary SUVs which attracted a youthful, adventurous demographic of buyers. The Pathfinder was introduced only in a two-door body style and came equipped with a base 2.4L inline four-cylinder engine that produced up to 106 horsepower directed through a three-speed automatic transmission. A stronger 3.0L V6 engine capable of 145 horsepower and 180 pounds-per-foot of torque was also available as an option. In 1990, Nissan implemented several changes to the truck parts. The V6 engine was switched over to multi-point fuel injection and rated at 153 horsepower and 180 pounds-per-foot of torque. A four-door body style was also introduced for the first time, which would eventually become the only body style for the SUV. Revisions to such Pathfinder parts as the interior trim and the front-end grille were also made. For the rest of the first generation, other updates included a third brake light and other aesthetic changes.
1996 welcomed in the arrival of the second-generation Nissan Pathfinder. The model was now produced using a unibody construction, which allowed it an increase in size but also a decrease in weight. It also showcased a more rounded exterior shape. The base engine was a 3.3L V6 good for 168 horsepower and 196 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. Several updates were made to Pathfinder parts throughout the next few years but it wasn't until 2001 when the engine was improved to a 3.5L V6 that now showed off 240 horsepower along with 260 pounds-per-foot of torque. Thanks to the improvement in the powertrain, the Nissan Pathfinder was recognized with two consecutive Edmunds.com Most Wanted Awards (2001, 2002).
The third generation of the Nissan Pathfinder premiered at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Redesigned for the 2005 model year, the Pathfinder was constructed off of the same platform as the Frontier, Titan, Xterra, Armada, and Infiniti QX56. Engine options consisted of a 4.0L V6 capable of 270 horsepower and 291 pounds-per-foot of torque and a 2.5L Turbo Diesel which produced 174 horsepower and 297 pounds-per-foot of torque. Engines were mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. New Nissan Pathfinder parts included an independent suspension, traction control, and an anti-slip system. A hefty 5.6L V8 became available as an option, as well, and delivers 310 horsepower with 380 pounds-per-foot of torque. Since it was first introduced in the mid 1980s, the Pathfinder has become a visible presence on the road and one of Nissan's most respected vehicles. It has also been recognized around the industry by various automotive media outlets. In 2001, it was nominated to Car and Driver's Ten Best List. The Nissan Pathfinder has also been named on the Automobile Magazine 50 Great New Cars List (2005) and an AMI Auto World Best Used Car (2006).
