Replacing the Loyale in 1993, a compact Subaru Impreza came as a sedan and wagon. Not known as a performance car in North America, the model debuted rather humbly. It was offered with a 1.8-liter engine only, which produced 110 hp, and standard front drive or optional all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive became standard in 1997 though. The Subaru Impreza was offered in three trim levels: base, L, and LS (later renamed LX). Standard features were a driver-side airbag and antilock braking (on the LS trim). In 1995, a two-door coupe model was also introduced. There were three trims for coupes and sedans: base, L, and LX. As for wagons, they were offered in the L and LX trims. In 1995, the Impreza received an optional 2.2-liter engine with an output of 135 hp. Available with a four-speed automatic, a larger engine was offered with a five-speed manual next year. A low-budget Brighton AWD coupe was added to the model line in 1996. As for the 1997 model year, the LX trim was dropped. Same year the power output of the 2.2-liter engine was increased. Remaining the only small car with standard all-wheel drive, the 1998 Impreza featured minor changes in the interior parts. A new coupe, the 2.5 RS model debuted the same year with a 165-hp 2.5-liter engine. The desirable model featured sport-tuned suspension, a non-functional hood scoop, and gold-colored alloy wheels. As for the end of the first generation, a sportier 2.5 RS sedan arrived with a 2.5-liter engine.

The second generation Impreza was sold in 2002-2007 and came as a five-passenger sedan or wagon. Stiffer, more refined, and safer, compared to the previous generation model, the Impreza arrived as a “premium” subcompact. The following trims represented the second generation: the 2.5 RS sedan, WRX sedan and wagon, 2.5 TS Sport wagon and Outback Sport wagon. The 165-hp 2.5-liter engine went with the 2.5 RS sedan, 2.5 TS Sport wagon, and Outback Sport wagon. The WRX got a turbocharged 227-hp 2.0-liter engine. The new Impreza was well equipped, featuring cruise control, a CD player, power windows/locks, dual visor vanity mirrors, and a lighted ignition switch. Starting in 2004, the model gained revised front-end styling, more convenience features, and updated suspension components. In 2004, the model line was expanded with the performance WRX STI sedan, carrying a 300-hp turbocharged engine. This trim of the Impreza quickly became iconic among performance enthusiasts. Impreza's interior was refreshed in 2005 with better materials, new center console, door panels, and the redesigned (from 4-spoke to 3-spoke) steering wheel. The front styling was refreshed in 2006. The same year the renamed 2.5i trim (former 2.5 RS) featured updated engines with a gain of 10 hp. As for safety features, all trims had front side airbags as standard equipment.

With four inches longer wheelbase, fresh exterior/interior Impreza parts, and additional safety features, the third generation Impreza came as a four-door sedan and hatchback. While the Outback Sport and WRX STI came only as hatchbacks, the 2.5i, 2.5GT, and WRX were available in both body styles. The 2.5 GT model got a turbocharged engine with an output of 224 hp and standard automatic transmission with manual-shift capability. Apart from turbo engine, this performance-oriented model gained improved Subaru Impreza parts such as firmer suspension, larger wheels, a hood scoop, a sunroof, heated front seats, and automatic climate control. The 2.5i featured cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry, air conditioning, and four-speaker stereo with a CD player. The 2.5i Premium's Special Package featured heated front seats and a sunroof. A new wireless cell-phone link was added to the navigation system of this model. New to this generation safety features were the curtain side airbags and anti-skid system with traction control.

Subaru knew they had to think a little "outside the box" when it came time to delve more into the small car genre. They didn't want to just design and produce a model that was good enough to get by, but that's about it. This ideology brought us the Impreza, which is anything but ordinary. This stylish and zippy performing compact doesn't just make the grade, it makes the honor roll. With more traction and handling than any in its class, the Impreza consistently outshines the field. Stylish, ergonomically sound, and on the rise, the Impreza has few rivals.
