The Toyota Sienna is a minivan that debuted for the 1998 model year. Designed for families and single folks alike, the first generation of the Sienna could fit up to seven passengers and showcased removable third-row seats to stow away extra cargo. It was equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine capable of 145 horsepower and 209 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle was initially offered in three trim levels: CE, LE, and XLE, with the XLE being designated as the luxury trim, displaying leather seats and wood accents. In 2001, the model was given a redesign to certain Sienna parts, which included a new front-end grille, new tail lights, and an updated instrument cluster. Optional safety features consisted of front-seat side airbags and stability control. Switches for power sliding doors and rear vents were also installed. The engine was given a boost as well. Variable valve timing was added, upping the horsepower to 210 and the torque to 220 pounds-per-foot. A sliding driver's side door was made standard on all trims (it was previously only available on the LE and XLE).
2004 welcomed in the arrival of the second generation Toyota Sienna. For the first time, the model was available in all-wheel drive. The engine was updated to a 3.3L V6 configuration rated at around 230 horsepower. A bevy of new standard features and Toyota Sienna parts were showcased, including power-retractable side-windows, eight-passenger seating (CE and LE), dual-power sliding doors, a power liftgate (optional on LE, standard on XLE and XLE Limited), rear climate control, remote keyless entry, and run-flat tires. Trim levels still involved the CE, LE, and XLE, however, a new XLE-Limited also joined the lineup. Upscale options such as Dynamic Laser Cruise Control, voice-activated navigation (with backup camera), a ten-speaker JBL stereo, and a rear DVD entertainment system were offered, with XLE Limited drivers getting the added choice of HID headlights. 2006 brought on another set of changes. Such Sienna parts as the headlights, side molding, and front fascia were restyled. The XLE Limited became known simply as the Limited. A year later, the base engine became a 3.5L V6 good for 266 horsepower.
The third generation of the Toyota Sienna was unveiled in late 2009 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The base and LE got an inline four-cylinder engine (187 horsepower) mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The main trim levels in the lineup are: base, LE, XLE, and Limited, with the LE and XLE obtainable in both seven and eight-passenger body styles. Front-wheel drive is standard on all versions of the Sienna, but all-wheel drive is offered for the LE, XLE, and Limited. The XLE and Limited also received a heartier 3.5L V6 good for 265 horsepower with the same automatic transmission as the base and LE. As for equipment, the base model shows off alloy wheels, dual sliding doors, tri-zone air conditioning, and power accessories. The LE steps it up with a backup camera, power-sliding side doors, and an upgraded stereo. XLE models display a power liftgate, a sunroof, and leather seats (all-wheel drive XLEs have second-row lounge seats and footrests). The top-level Limited features two sunroofs, a power-folding rear seat, second-row lounge seats, and a JBL stereo system.
What the Toyota Sienna offers is comfort, technology, and performance. Just like its super-sibling, the Camry, the Sienna provides drivers with an efficient method of transportation that not only gets the job done, but looks good doing it. The right touch of sleekness fits right in with the exterior parts, giving motorists a fashionable machine in which to do their traveling. Simply put, it's a remarkable vehicle that is only getting stronger.
