An original treasure of the Korean auto industry, Daewoo boasts a roster that includes sporty yet economical sedans and SUVs. Now owned by GM, Daewoo 's history goes back over 70 years, having first been founded as National Motor in 1937. Eventually, the name was changed to Saenara Motor and the company got its start by assembling the Datsun Bluebird. Ownership of the automaker changed in 1965, changing the name to Shinjin Motor. This move helped Shinjin with greater access to Toyota platforms, taking on models including the Publica and Corona. In 1972, Toyota was no longer involved, leading Shinjin Motor to begin a venture with General Motors that would eventually be known as Saehan Motor. With GMK (General Motors Korea), Saehan took over the Chevy 1700 and rebadged it the Saehan Camina. The late 1970s bought on the development of the Royale, a midsize sedan.
Daewoo took over in 1982, changing the name of the marque to Daewoo Motor Company. The brand's first in-house model was the LeMans, which premiered in 1986. It was marketed globally as the Pontiac LeMans, Passport Optima, and Asuna. Best known in North America as the Pontiac LeMans, the subcompact was a big achievement for Daewoo. The Royale became the Imperial in 1989 and was designated as Daewoo's flagship model. 1990 saw the arrival of the Espero, an Italian designed four-door midsize sedan based on GM's J platform. However, two years later, Daewoo's partnership with GM ended. In 1994, Daewoo used the Honda Legend as its base for the Arcadia to take over for the Imperial's place in the lineup. The late '90s welcomed in the addition of three of the brand's most successful models, the Lanos, Leganza, and the Matiz. The Lanos premiered in 1996 as a family car available in three different body styles while the Leganza (1997) is a midsize four-door sedan. The Matiz premiered in 1998 and is a subcompact that would prove to be the brand's most popular car over the next few years.
Amidst financial woes, GM took over Daewoo and in 2002, produced the first car under new ownership, the Lacetti. The Daewoo Lacetti is a compact available as a hatchback, wagon, and sedan that GM marketed under several brand-names around the world. Newer models such as the subcompact Gentra along with the Tosca have been other successes under the GM Daewoo name. Another triumph for the brand has been the Windstorm, the first SUV under the Daewoo name. The Windstorm is a midsize crossover that is also rebadged by GM as the Holden Captiva and the Opel Astara. In 2008, the Lacetti was updated as the Lacetti Premiere and featured a restyling of parts based on the Chevy Cruze.
Daewoo is a name that stands for more than just economy and efficiency. There is also an element of style and modernity that has to be accounted for. Daewoo models are known as much for their look as they are their drivetrains, and with a legacy that is only growing by the day, the picture is becoming clearer.
