When thinking about vehicles built for speed and power, the very first word that comes to one's mind is Ferrari. The perfect choice for those who have thirst for high-powered and high-priced vehicles, Ferrari offers alliance of paramount performance and ambitious design. The foreword to the brand's life-story was written in 1929, when Enzo Anselmo Ferrari founded his Scuderia Ferrari as the racing team for Alfa Romeo. At that time, his goal was to sponsor amateur drivers, as well as to manufacture race cars and performance parts. By the 1930's, Enzo Ferrari was already an experienced racer, and no wonder why. From 1920 to 1929, he raced for Alfa Romeo in local competitions and managed development of the factory Alfa Romeo vehicles. It was then, when he began laying the groundwork to build his own vehicle. Ferrari left Alfa Romeo in 1938. However, the agreement concluded with the company restricted him from designing and racing for four years, which is why Enzo Ferrari transformed his Scuderia into Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari that manufactured and supplied auto parts and accessories to other racing teams. During the World War II, Enzo Ferrari relocated to Maranello, where his company is still headquartered today.
The very first street-ready vehicle adorned with the Ferrari badge hit the market in 1947. It was the Ferrari 125S, equipped with a 1.5 L V12 engine and underpinned by a tube frame chassis and double wishbone/live axle suspension. Two years later, Ferrari entered the grand touring market with the Ferrari 166 Inter, which shared architecture with the 125S. During the 1950s, Ferrari employed Aurelio Lampredi and Vittorio Jano who were the legendary engineers of the time, and by 1953, the team created the 357 America and the first 250 GT. By 1960, production of Ferrari vehicles grew to 300 cars per year, whereas in 1950 it barely reached 80 cars. Enzo Ferrari never gave up on race cars and performance parts. At the 1950 British Grand Prix, the brand scored its first world championship grand prix win. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, Ferrari went on to distinguish itself on the racetrack. At the same time, Ferrari manufactured sleek and powerful road cars, such as the 275 GTB, 250 California, 365 GTB4 "Daytona" and "Dino" 246 GT, named to honor Enzo's son Alfredino who died of muscular dystrophy in 1956.
After struggling with years of financial issues, Ferrari sold a 50% stake of his company to the Fiat Group in 1969. The sale had no impact on Ferrari's focus, however available investment funds instantly increased and the brand's line-up received a significant boost. The '70s were marked by introduction of innovative Ferrari parts and new models, such as the 308 GTB, 308 GT4, 288 GTO, and 365 GT4 BB. The next decade saw the Ferrari Mondial, the F40, and the iconic Testarossa. The Ferrari F40 was the last new model launched before Enzo Ferrari passed away. When the company's founder died in 1988, Fiat's share rocketed to 90%. The brand turned into a living legend and the value of the cars immediately rose. The 1990's were very productive. The company introduced the 456 and the 550 Maranello grand tourers, the 348 and F355 sports cars, as well as the F50 supercar. When in 1996 Michael Schumacher joined the Ferrari racing team, the brand regained its luster on the racetrack, which was lost after the death of Enzo Ferrari. As for the new millennium, it brought the company a variety of new models, including the Enzo, 458 Italia, 599 GTB Fiorano, F430, and California. Today, Ferrari supplies world's fastest race cars, innovative auto parts, as well as the most powerful and luxurious road vehicles.
For Ferrari, with its unique history of racetrack competition and sports cars manufacturing, a legacy of innovation is predictable. What makes Ferrari a Ferrari is that when it comes to speed and performance, they accept no compromises. Iconic and impeccable, each Ferrari vehicle has the ability to blend phenomenal power with stunning design, which is what sets the brand apart from the field. It seems that the prancing horse emblem, once offered to Enzo Ferrari as a good-luck charm for his vehicles, does the trick. The gold standard in performance, Ferrari translates the winning racing technologies to its road vehicles.
