Known for upscale presence and performance, Jaguar is one of the world's leading manufacturers of luxury automobiles and auto parts. Jaguar was founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley, two motorcyclists who wanted to assemble their own line of bikes and sidecars. By the early 1930s, the company switched over to making passenger cars and changed the name of the brand to SS Cars Ltd. 1935 brought on the release of the SS Jaguar 100, a two-seat roadster. Following World War II, SS Cars changed the name to Jaguar in an effort to separate the car company from the Nazi party. Soon after, Jaguar introduced the XK 120, a popular sports car available as a sedan, coupe, or drop-head coupe and outfitted with an inline six-cylinder engine. In 1951, the full-size Mark VII Saloon became to hit American shores and would go on to give the brand further notoriety later on when it would win the Monte Carlo Rally in 1956.
During the '60s, Jaguar premiered several notable models including the sporty XK-E (E-Type), full-size Mark X, and the vaunted XJ series, which is still produced today. The XJ series picked up steam throughout the next decade, as Jaguar would begin offering the XJ6C, XJ-S, and XJ12. The XJ-S took over for the E-Type in 1975 and was initially equipped with a 5.3L V12 engine, as was the XJ12, which debuted in 1972. Jaguar kept the momentum going into the '80s with the XJ-S HE, named as such for the high efficiency 295 horsepower engine. A convertible XJ-SC joined the lineup in 1983. Towards the end of the decade, Jaguar began to become increasingly competitive with other European companies such as BMW and Mercedes and agreed to sell to the Ford Motor Company in 1990.
The 1990s were sprinkled with several Jaguar standouts, including the XK8 in 1996. The Jaguar XK8 was the brand's first model featuring a V8 engine, the AJ-V8. Also making its first appearance in the middle of the decade was the XJR, which showcased a supercharged AJ16 inline six-cylinder engine to go along with its luxurious, sporty image. The S-Type rolled off the line in 1998 while the supercharged S-Type R was right on its heels a few years later to remain competitive with Mercedes' E Class as well as BMW's M45. In 2001, Jaguar unveiled the X-Type, a compact four-door based off of Ford's CD132 platform, which was reserved for the company's midsize offerings. At its launch, the X-Type was only available with four-wheel drive and a 3.0L V6, but a couple of years later Jaguar began offering the model with front-wheel drive and an optional four-cylinder diesel engine or 2.0L petrol V6.
